April 13, 2023

Located on the summit of Flagstaff Mountain is the Sunrise Amphitheater. This venue is
conveniently located while also providing stunning views overlooking the city of Boulder

surrounded by scenery without traveling too far away from the city.

If you’re searching for Sunrise Amphitheater because you’re thinking about getting married there, you’re probably drawn to the same thing most couples are.

Open sky. Big Colorado views. The feeling of standing above Boulder with nothing but mountains around you.

This guide will walk you through what it’s actually like to get married at Sunrise Amphitheater, how permits work, what time of day is best, what season to choose, and the mistakes I see couples make when they don’t plan it intentionally.

Sunrise Amphitheater Venue Cost: $100 – $400 (depending on the reservation – more information can be found at City of Boulder website)

Capacity: 100 guests

Where Is Sunrise Amphitheater?

Sunrise Amphitheater sits on the summit of Flagstaff Mountain in Boulder, Colorado.

Address: 1198 Flagstaff Dr, Boulder, CO 80302

It overlooks the city of Boulder and stretches out toward the plains. You can drive directly to it, which makes it one of the most accessible mountain ceremony locations in the area.

You get dramatic scenery without needing to hike miles into the backcountry. That balance is part of what makes a Sunrise Amphitheater elopement so appealing.

Can You Get Married at Sunrise Amphitheater?

Yes. But you need to reserve it.

Sunrise Amphitheater is managed by the City of Boulder. To get married at Sunrise Amphitheater, you must:

  • Reserve a time slot through Boulder Parks and Recreation
  • Pay the reservation fee
  • Follow all posted city rules and regulations

Pricing typically ranges from $100 to $400 depending on residency and the time slot selected. One hour morning reservations are available and are ideal for sunrise ceremonies. Three hour blocks are also available.

Capacity is listed at 100 guests, though in practice this location works best for elopements or intimate weddings.

Always verify current pricing and policies directly through the City of Boulder website, as regulations can change.

The Biggest Mistake Couples Make

Booking the middle of the day.

It’s called Sunrise Amphitheater for a reason.

Midday light here is direct and unforgiving. There’s very little shade, and the stone seating reflects light upward. That combination creates harsh shadows and squinting faces, especially in summer.

Sunrise is calm. Quiet. Cooler. The light wraps instead of blasting.

If you want your Sunrise Amphitheater elopement to feel intentional instead of rushed and exposed, sunrise is the move.

Sunset can work, but sunrise is consistently the most beautiful and predictable option.

Best Season to Get Married at Sunrise Amphitheater

If you want the safest bet, aim for summer or fall.

June through October offers the most predictable weather on Flagstaff Mountain. Summer mornings are often clear and calm. Early fall brings cooler air and golden tones that look incredible against the stone amphitheater and surrounding landscape.

Spring can bring snow and muddy conditions. Winter ceremonies are possible, but road access and wind exposure become real considerations.

If your goal is minimal stress and reliable conditions, late summer and early fall are hard to beat for a Sunrise Amphitheater elopement.

Parking and Accessibility

You can drive directly to Sunrise Amphitheater.

There are approximately 13 on-site parking spaces, and additional nearby lots on Flagstaff Mountain. Carpooling is strongly encouraged for larger groups.

The amphitheater itself includes stone steps and uneven surfaces and is not fully ADA accessible. If you have guests with mobility concerns, it’s worth visiting the location ahead of time to assess what feels comfortable.

All vehicles not registered in Boulder County are required to have a parking permit.

Alcohol and Amenities

You are allowed to bring alcohol, but a City of Boulder alcohol permit is required. That permit is typically around $25.

You must also follow strict park rules. No amplified music. No live bands. No drones. No glass. No open flames. No confetti, petals, rice, or unsecured decor.

This is natural park land. The city is serious about keeping it that way.

Commercial Photography Permits on Flagstaff Mountain

If you are hiring a professional photographer for your Sunrise Amphitheater elopement, a commercial photography permit may be required.

A facility reservation covers photography within the amphitheater itself, but additional commercial photography on other parts of Flagstaff Mountain may require a separate permit.

This matters because many couples want portraits at nearby overlooks like Lost Gulch or along Flagstaff trails.

Your photographer should understand these requirements and guide you through them so there are no surprises.

Sunrise Amphitheater Pricing

Pricing for the Sunrise Amphitheater is based on time slots, with options for one hour and three hour slots. One hour time slots are available in the morning, making it an ideal location for a sunrise event.

The pricing for one hour slots is:

• $100 for residents
• $150 for non-residents

Three hour time slots are also available, with the following pricing:

• $300 for residents
• $400 for non-residents

The capacity of this venue is 100 guests.

What a Sunrise Amphitheater Elopement Actually Feels Like

This venue shines when it stays simple.

You don’t need heavy decor. You don’t need an arch. You don’t need production.

You stand in a 1933 stone amphitheater built from locally sourced rock. The sun rises over Boulder. The city is still waking up. There’s wind in the trees and quiet in the air.

The couples who thrive here are the ones who care more about presence than performance.

Keep it small.

Lean into the landscape.

Let the light do the work.

That’s when Sunrise Amphitheater becomes more than a venue. It becomes a moment.

Lost Gulch Overlook

Lost Gulch Over look is EPIC. If you only want to walk 90 seconds from the car you couldn’t ask for a better view. It’s a rocky viewpoint looking out miles and miles across colorado. You’re able to see 14ers hours away covered in snow while you sit on your own safe rock in Boulder. It can get fairly busy, but it’s worth a stop. If you’re willing to hike a little bit more and value privacy, I’ve got a few other spots we can chat about.

Chautauqua Park

Chautauqua Park is at the foot of Flagstaff Mountain and offers beautiful views of the Flatirons! It’s super easy to get to, and not very challenging to hike. While it can get fairly busy there, the park is so large that I’ve never any issue fidning a corner without people.

Downtown Boulder

Downtown Boulder is a ton of fun! From its bustling pedestrian malls to its charming boutiques and cafes, this vibrant district offers endless opportunities for capturing the energy and excitement of urban life. I love to wander the streets, camera in hand, capturing candid moments, vibrant street scenes, and the unique character of this lively city.
